This Saturday September 4th starting at 10 AM the Chevy Chase Library will be having a party to celebrate the end of the Summer reading program.  This years theme was "Make a Splash", and we will be having games, prizes and fun!

How we read to children is as important as how frequently we read to them.  With school beginning very soon, here are some helpful suggestions to use with pre-schoolers as well as even younger children, as we begin to reinforce those early literacy skills.

Children learn most from picture books when they are actively involved with the reader and the book.  “Dialogic Reading is an interactive shared reading technique designed to enhance early literacy skills and language development.”  It is the child and adult having a conversation about the pictures and the text that is most important.  Research from the U.S. Department of Education shows that dialogic reading is based on three main strategies:

This month the Character Death Match featured two beloved characters: Gandalf the Grey/White, from Lord of the Rings vs. Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter Series.

On July 26, at 1 p.m. when the doors opened to the Chevy Chase Library, people poured in to escape the heat. Even though the temperature had not hit the 100 mark, much of the community had suffered power outage from the weekend's storm. As time passed, more and more new faces were seen, and these first-time users learned how to get a library card, access the computer and even check out materials.
 
Laptop and computer seekers filled every chair, table and outlet. The phone was ringing off the hook with inquires about our hours, air, and wi-fi access. The library became a hub where neighbors greeted each other, and commiserated while waiting for their turn to check their e-mail. Laptop users could be found hunkered down near any available outlet savoring the library’s free wi-fi.
