Celebrate the Wonderful Women of Dance!
Published on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 - 11:18pm
To commemorate Women's History Month, a display on the Women of Dance will be at the Chevy Chase Library throughout March. It is full of unexpected tidbits. For example:
- Josephine Baker entertained newly liberated inmates at Buchenwald who were too emaciated to be moved right after the war.
- Eartha Kitt got her start in show business as a dancer with Katherine Dunham's troupe.
- Maya Plisetskaya's father was killed in Stalin's purges, and her mother was sent to a labor camp in Kazakhstan.
The great women of dance have some amazing stories. Here's a sneak preview of the display.
