Tour of Washington, D.C.
When students from Hendley Elementary School attended a Black History Program recently, we began by taking a tour through the library using pictures from Picturing America and other post cards from around the city. After the tour, students received a map of Washington, D.C. and were asked to locate different landmarks: the Lincoln Memorial, White House, Smithsonian, National Mall and etc. Students also received a booklet with pictures of prominent African Americans. They were asked to write a paragraph about each person. Teachers and students walked away feeling satisfied knowing a little more about the historic locations D.C. and how to get there using their maps.
