Pop!: Meet Brea

Pop! Street Fashion is an experimental collection of patron street fashion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. It is devoted to photographically documenting the sartorial narratives of patrons who visit the library. Please email My Nguyen for more information.
Brea, 18, stopped by Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library's Popular division wearing a pair of amazing mirrored sunglasses that could rival the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. My favorite part of her style was her ombré hair, dyed golden at the ends, which added dimension to an already very cool, vaguely 90s (one of three of my favorite decades) outfit. A self-described old soul, she will attend Temple University in the fall to study geography and urban planning.
Who are your fashion icons?
I like Kelis’s style. Iggy Azalea. She’s an Australian rapper. Usually I’ll just see something and I’ll think, “Oh, that’s really cool. How can I make it interesting?”
I just read Kendra by Coe Booth. It was pretty good.
Why do you like the library?
I didn’t come here often before but I realize there are a lot of resources that are untapped. There are a lot of things out here, like free classes. The other day I was helping people with an Internet and email class. [There are] a lot of different resources that people are unaware about. And they’re all free.
Describe your hair.
My hair is normally an Afro. But I straightened it and put in a weave and I ombréd the tracts and my friend put it in for me. I think I might dye it green next week.
Who are your favorite bands?
I like a lot of dubsteb. Indie. Electronica. I like a lot of other different things too. Outkast. Hot Chip. Just a lot of different things.
What is your idea of happiness?
Just being aware of yourself. Being true to yourself. Not having to impress anyone. And of course, being with people you really admire, like your family and friends. Surrounding yourself with people who care for you so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable or threatened by anything.
My mom…my mom! My grandma.
And what are your hobbies?
I like to find out new things that I didn’t know before, music and fashion-wise. I like to entertain friends. I’m starting to get into photography. Shopping.
Is that a hobby? [Editor’s note: Yes.]
