Pop! Meet Kial

Pop! Street Fashion is an experimental collection of patron street fashion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. It is devoted to photographically documenting the sartorial narratives of patrons who visit the library. Please email My Nguyen for more information.
Recently, Kial walked in to MLK and I just had to photograph her. A vision with cropped hair and a devil-may-care outfit, she was a lovely, modern-day interpretation of how I imagine people dressed during the heyday of the DC hardcore punk scene. What was even more special about her outfit, though, were the accoutrements that give a personal touch: band buttons and an adorable flower barrette that softened the toughness a leather jacket exudes.
Kial is 23 and enjoys comic books.
What are your fashions inspirations?
Oh, wow. I guess I’m inspired by 70s punk, but sometimes I tend to go off of that. That’s mainly my jumping point, though. I just collect a lot of pieces and whatever I like the most just is what I do.
What are your favorite bands?
Dead Kennedys, Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Ramones, late 70s/early 80s old school punk rock.
What brought you to MLK today?
I have a serving and bartending workshop. I’m currently working in the restaurant industry and the Restaurant Opportunities Commission of DC holds these classes for free. Our class today is to develop our resume.
Have you been here before?
I have been here before, when I was in college. I really like the way the building is constructed. It’s got a nice classic feel to it. I like it a lot.
Where did you go for college?
I went to Westwood College for Animation.
I’d like to be a graphic designer.
What are your favorite books?
I like a lot of comic books. When I went to the Small Press Expo, I got a lot of independent and self-published things from artists. It’s really fun. Daniel Clowes is pretty good. He’s the one that did Ghost World. I also like a lot of web comics. I could go on forever.
Girls with Slingshots. Publishes every week day.
Describe yourself in 5 words or less.
Oh wow. This feels like a real interview.
Edgy but simple.
I don’t like a lot of frills. I’m pretty no frills. I’m not high maintenance.
I love the Internet. I also cook, draw, read.
