Teen Space welcomes all with books out of the ordinary. Join Teens on March 7 at 4 p.m. to meet-up with novels about strong female and male characters.
Available for pick-up is the fantastical Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Can you meet the challenge of creating a fantasy from a group of strange-looking individuals? Photography buff and writer Ransom Riggs did. Meet 16-year-old Jacob Portman, who watches terrified as a shadowy figure murders his grandfather. Jacob needs to find the truth and travels with his dad to Wales - the place of his grandfather's stories. Through a time loop, Jacob meets his grandfather's past at "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" and learns about his own "peculiarity." Can he use his power to find his grandfather's murderer? Can Jacob prevent Miss Peregrine and the children from coming to harm? Through an unlikely hero, Jacob builds his courage to meet this test.
Meet up with a Teen Space fave, Kenneth Oppel's This Dark Endeavor. You will enter into the debate between science and alchemy in the early 19th century. Victor Frankenstein discovers alchemy by accidentally opening a secret passageway in his father's castle. The stairwell leads to a library filled with books on how to change the impossible, such as changing lead into gold and escaping death. Victor discovers the scientific method from the doctor who is treating his brother's illness. The doctor tells him there is no cure. What would you do to save the life of your twin? Accept the limitations of science or the imagined possibilities of Alchemy?
An alchemist sends Victor, his twin Conrad, his cousin Elizabeth and friend Henry on a quest for the three ingredients to make the Elixir of Life. The search demands taking lichen off a tree guarded by vultures; killing a shark-like fish for its oil that can only be found in a lake reached through a maze of underground caves. The third ingredient remains a riddle: "it is a part close at hand." What price do these dangers extract? Find out and read This Dark Endeavor -- and its new sequel, Such Wicked Intent.
