'The Asphalt Jungle,' 1950
This caper noir is directed by John Huston, from a novel of the same name by W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar, Scarface, High Sierra), and stars an ensemble cast including Sterling Hayden, Jean Hagen, and a young Marilyn Monroe in her breakthrough role. Ultimately the story of the planning and execution of a jewel heist that goes horribly awry in true noir fashion, Huston’s sharp cinematography, fast-paced editing, and bleak storyline make this an Academy Award-nominated classic of the genre.
