DC Public Library is a 2024 Finalist for the IMLS National Medal for Museum and Library Service

Nomination recognizes the library’s exceptional service and commitment to the District.

DC Public Library has been named a finalist for the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries. Presented by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) the DC Public Library is among 30 finalists vying for the honor.

"Being named a finalist for the National Medal celebrates DC Public Library’s 15-year journey to reimagine its physical campus and public services," said Richard Reyes-Gavilan, executive director of the DC Public Library. "Often seen nationally as just a federal town, D.C. is also the home of beloved local institutions, none more beloved than DC Public Library. Recognition as a finalist offers the rare and wonderful opportunity to showcase the Library's great work more broadly."

The National Medal is given to museums and libraries that demonstrate significant impact in their communities. For 30 years, the award has honored institutions that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities. Since its inception in 1994, 212 institutions have been recognized. The winners of the 2024 medal will be announced in late May.

The nomination underscores DC Public Library's pivotal role in enriching the lives of District residents through a wide array of programs and initiatives. From literacy and education to digital inclusion and community support, the Library’s work reflects a deep commitment to serving the diverse needs of the District.

In anticipation of the announcement, IMLS is encouraging community members to share personal stories, images, and videos on social media about how the Library has impacted their lives, using hashtags #ShareYourStory and #IMLSmedals.
