The Social Sciences Division covers a wide spectrum of disciplines that focus on the study of human life and experiences. Major subjects include anthropology, sociology, political science, law, public administration, military science, social work, criminology, education, customs, folklore, etiquette, philosophy, psychology, history, genealogy and travel.  

The collection features a large number of biographies, atlases and travel guides as well as a vast array of popular and scholarly materials on aging, slavery, race relations, feminism, international relations, constitutional law, fundraising, higher education, self-esteem, dreams, ethics, the occult, the American Civil War and World War II.   

The New York Times microform collection and corresponding indexes are found in the unit. In addition to circulating and reference collections, the division prepares subject bibliographies and sponsors local and national speakers that address topics of interest to the community.
