POSITION TITLE: Library Associate (LA)
SALARY: CS-7 $17.35 - $22.77 CS-1411-7/8 (Part-time 20 hours CS-8 $19.05 - $24.52 per hour. Several positions may be filled per hour from this announcement.)

LOCATION: Neighborhood Library Services and/or Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library
HOURS: As scheduled within the weekday hours 8:45 a.m. - 9 p.m., and on weekends as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: CS-7: A bachelor’s degree from a college or university and two years of specialized experience in a library, bookstore or educational setting. At least one year of specialized experience must have been comparable to the next lower grade level or two years of specialized experience at the second lower grade level. CS-8: A minimum of one year’s experience at the CS-7 level as a Library Associate and completion of the District of Columbia Public Library LA certificate training program or equivalent LA certificate training program in another public library system. All applicants must present a combination of experience, education, skills, self-development and expertise that demonstrates the capacity to perform the duties of the position.
FUNCTIONS: Under the general supervision of a Supervisory Librarian, the incumbent in partnership with a professional librarian provides paraprofessional assistance in a variety of services to promote the effective use of the library by the public. The incumbent provides basic reference and reader’s advisory service using both print and electronic resources; assists customers with directional inquiries and instruction in the use of the library; instructs customers in the use of computers; assists in monitoring and troubleshooting on-line systems; assists the librarian with overall maintenance of library collections; participates in the preparation and promotion of library programs. Performs routine clerical work as necessary and performs other related duties as assigned.
RESIDENCY: A person applying for a position in the Career Service, or Management Supervisory Service, who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no fewer than eight proofs of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for seven consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the seven-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
