Community Connections

Anacostia Library

The Anacostia Neighborhood Library is pleased to be partnering with Community Connections, who will be here every Tuesday and Thursday to provide supportive services to promote housing stability and to prevent homelessness. Services offered include assistance with obtaining IDs, completing applications for services, and guidance with regards to Social Security Disability Income. Community Connections staff will be located in one of our study rooms and no appointment is needed. 

Toddler Story Time

Get up and get moving at our Toddler Story Time. This 20-30 minute program is full of books, songs and fun activities designed to help develop your child’s language skills. Children ages 18-36 months and their grownups are encouraged to engage with the stories and activities and participate in the program.  Space is limited; participants are admitted on a first come, first served basis beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Have a group? Please call ahead of time to arrange a special visit.

Help celebrate Thanksgiving with a special Thanksgiving Story Time! Parklands-Turner library staff will read stories about Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 21st at 10 a.m.  As with all library story times, there will be singing, activity, and fun for all.

The Adult Learning Lab will be from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Skill assessments for adults who need a high school diploma (GED or National External Diploma) and tutoring for those with skills at the high school level. Tutoring on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.  Assessments on Wednesdays.

A story time experience for our youngest library users and their caregivers. These 20-30 minutes story times introduce books, songs, rhymes, tickles and bounces developmentally appropriate for children ages birth to when they start walking.  Baby Lap Time is a wonderful way to introduce your child to the joys of reading in a positive and fun atmosphere. This story time is designed so the baby will be in their caregiver’s lap and the grownup is actively involved in the program. It is recommended that each child have their own adult with them.

Let’s Communicate in American Sign Language: Beginning Level Tuesdays 12 – 1 p.m. September 12 - November 28, 2017    Bring your lunch and join us at Noon for weekly ASL classes in the Library Express large meeting room.  This Beginning Level class will cover 100+ ASL vocabulary words and rules of grammar. Review what you know, learn new signs, and practice conversation. Although focus is on beginners, everyone is welcome to join the class, regardless of skill level.
