The Cool Place to Be...Literally!

On July 26, at 1 p.m. when the doors opened to the Chevy Chase Library, people poured in to escape the heat. Even though the temperature had not hit the 100 mark, much of the community had suffered power outage from the weekend's storm. As time passed, more and more new faces were seen, and these first-time users learned how to get a library card, access the computer and even check out materials. 

Dog Days of Summer

Join us for a special event on July 22 at 10:30 AM. Meet Clara the bomb sniffing dog, pet therapy dogs, and find out what a day in the life of a Vet is like.

Free Meditation Workshop

The library will be hosting a free meditation workshop entitled "Staying Sane in an Insane World"on Monday, July 12, at 7 p.m.  The workshop will be led by Zelma Chamberlain, a meditation lecturer and practitioner. Everyone is welcome!

Grammy-Nominated Artist Christylez Bacon

The Chevy Chase Library is proud to welcome Grammy-nominated performer Christylez Bacon as part of its "Make Waves at Your Library" teen summer reading program.  Make musical waves through poetry and hip-hop while learning the techniques of poetic self-expression with the West African Djembe drum, acoustic guitar and rhythmic sounds from a human beat box. Bacon will be performing on Monday, July 12, at 4 p.m.  Patrons 18 and younger are welcome.  

Chevy Chase Hosts Teen Book-Making Workshop

The Chevy Chase Library will host a book-making workshop Monday June 14, at 7 p.m. as part of the "Make Waves at Your Library" summer teen reading program. Artist Karen Brown will teach various book construction techniques using recycled materials. Patrons 18 and under are invited to participate.  

Author Event: Dolen Perkins-Valdez

The Chevy Chase Library welcomes local author Dolen Perkins-Valdez on Saturday, May 12, at noon. Perkins-Valdez will read from and discuss her debut novel, Wench.  The Friends of the Chevy Chase Library will provide summertime refreshments and have copies of the book available for purchase and for Perkins-Valdez to sign.

Print Awareness

PRINT AWARENESSPrint Awareness is noticing print all around you, knowing how to hold a book, and how to follow the written words on a page.  In English we read from left to right and from top to bottom.  Children with print awareness skills begin to understand that print has different functions depending on the context i.e. recipes, menus, signs and labels, story books, and environmental signs.  The purpose of reading is to gain meaning from the text and understand the ideas that words convey.Suggestions to develop Print Awareness:
