Chevy Chase Hosts Teen Book-Making Workshop

The Chevy Chase Library will host a book-making workshop Monday June 14, at 7 p.m. as part of the "Make Waves at Your Library" summer teen reading program. Artist Karen Brown will teach various book construction techniques using recycled materials. Patrons 18 and under are invited to participate.  

Author Event: Dolen Perkins-Valdez

The Chevy Chase Library welcomes local author Dolen Perkins-Valdez on Saturday, May 12, at noon. Perkins-Valdez will read from and discuss her debut novel, Wench.  The Friends of the Chevy Chase Library will provide summertime refreshments and have copies of the book available for purchase and for Perkins-Valdez to sign.

Print Awareness

PRINT AWARENESSPrint Awareness is noticing print all around you, knowing how to hold a book, and how to follow the written words on a page.  In English we read from left to right and from top to bottom.  Children with print awareness skills begin to understand that print has different functions depending on the context i.e. recipes, menus, signs and labels, story books, and environmental signs.  The purpose of reading is to gain meaning from the text and understand the ideas that words convey.Suggestions to develop Print Awareness:

Our character death match displays have rapidly gained popularity.  Last month, Captain Jack Sparrow of the Black Pearl solidly trounced Captain Han Solo of the Millennium Falcon.   Captain Solo made a heroic attempt to come from behind, but he was still no match for swashbuckler Jack, who triumphed with 33 votes to Han's 20.

Alphabet letter knowledge is when children understand that letters look different from each other, that the letters have names, and that letters relate to specific units of sounds or phonemes.  Research states that letter knowledge is the most important predictor of skills supporting reading success by linking sounds together to decode text.Most children are ready to recognize letters by sight long before they are ready to translate them into sound.
