Share the fun of reading with your children ages 3-5 years! Children and their grownups will explore stories and activities to encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading and learning. These 30-40 minute programs are designed to promote language and listening skills, expand children’s imaginations and arouse their curiosity about the world around them.

Baby Lap Time is a wonderful way to introduce your child to the joys of reading in a positive and fun atmosphere. This story time is designed so the baby will be in their caregiver’s lap and the grownup is actively involved in the program. It is recommended that each child have their own adult with them.

French Story Time is for children of all ages. This program includes songs, music and motion and is very interactive. Children have the opportunity to practice their French by learning French songs, enjoying French stories and connecting words with motion.
This open, drop in anytime program is an interactive engagement program for children and caregivers that uses play and exploration to develop pre-literacy skills. Caregivers are expected to actively engage with children using the designed early literacy stations and prompts. This program will rotate through play, art and sensory sessions. Art builds fine motor skills and expression. Play is how children process literacy skills they have learned. Sensory times are multi-dimensional and involve lots of repetition and manipulations.
This program is for children of all ages who want to learn to play or improve their chess moves and play in tournaments. Our chess instructor will teach the chess players how to think and plan their next move and use their brain power to win. Come and join our chess group and learn to make a risky move, check and have fun. This program is made possible by the Friends of the Cleveland Park Library.
Join yoga instructor, Dexter Sumner, for an accessible, all-levels yoga class every Wednesday evening. Yoga will take place in the lower level meeting room. Please bring your own yoga mat.

Sing, play, dance and learn.That’s our motto for this program. Childrenof all ages will have the opportunity to play musical instruments, sing along with popular songs, dance to their favorite music, and learn the alphabet and how to count. This program is all about rhythm and speech stimuli that allow children to enjoy music.
These 20-to-30-minute story times are full of books, songs, rhymes and finger plays for children ages birth to 2 years old. Our Baby and Toddler Story Time is a great way to introduce your child to language skills in a positive and fun environment. With slightly more activity and movement than our lap times, children and their grownups are encouraged to engage with the books and songs and to actively participate in the program.
The new Cleveland Park Library, 3310 Connecticut Ave. NW, opens June 16. Virtually every child has a phase where they are fascinated by cars, trucks and anything else that moves people or things. It is one of the most common questions I get asked and while it is easy to point people to the non-fiction section on cars and trucks (629.2) or trains (385) it can be harder to find picture books on those beloved subjects. Audiobooks have come a long way from “books-on-tape,” and the library has lots of ways to enjoy them.
Picture books are a great resource for stories to read aloud to your child -- short, engaging and lusciously illustrated they are quite literally made to be shared together. However this list is for the reader and listener who are looking for something a bit more involved than a picture book but thematically still appropriate for younger listeners. Looking for something a little more complicated than Elephant and Piggie, but not quite ready to read Harry Potter? Beginner chapter books can be tricky to find especially since in my cases they are on the same shelf as longer chapter books. This guide highlights a few of my favorites of the genre.
