DC Public Library is in the process of updating its Behavior Guidelines (also known as Rules of Behavior) to better reflect our community’s needs, in line with the library’s core purpose and values. We want your input to help us shape these guidelines to ensure our libraries provide a safe, welcoming, and equitable environment for all. This process has three phases:
- DC Public Library Staff Input
- Community Input
- DC Public Library Board of Trustees Vote
We are entering Phase 2 and we want your input. DC Public Library is connecting with customers via a survey, focus groups and pop-up interviews at neighborhood libraries. Feedback from all stakeholders will be reviewed and considered alongside nationwide best practices and targeted community needs to build the new Behavior Guidelines.
Share your valuable input with the library today by completing this city-wide survey.

What Are Behavior Guidelines?
Behavior guidelines are how you set shared expectations around behaviors and conduct to ensure that all individuals feel safe and welcomed. Specifically in our libraries, they serve as a framework for both library staff and customers like you so that everyone understands what is expected of them. Clear guidelines that reflect the needs of all stakeholders help us cultivate more positive library experiences for all.
