Indigenous Peoples Day Hours

A library location will be open in each ward on Monday, Oct. 14 in observance of Indigenous Peoples Day. Neighborhood libraries will be open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library will be open from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

  • Ward 3 – Tenley-Friendship Library
  • Ward 4 – Petworth Library
  • Ward 5 – Woodridge Library

  • Ward 8 – Anacostia Library

The DC Public Library is open online for customers 365 days a year! Access digital resources and watch live and pre-recorded virtual programs on Youtube. *Specialty departments like the Adult Learning Department, Center for Accessibility, the Labs at DC Public Library and The People's Archive are not open on holidays.

Latine Heritage Month, Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together

Celebrate Latine Heritage Month with DC Public Library from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15! The 2024 theme is Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together which recognizes the many Latine individuals who have dedicated themselves to preserving and telling their stories, advocating for justice and equality, breaking barriers and more. Throughout the month, we invite you to discover inspiring stories about some of these individuals, stream movies and music by your favorite Latine artists and to stop by your neighborhood library for great events for all ages.

Latino Youth Community History Project

The Latino Youth Community History Project Oral History documents the personal histories of members of the Latino community of Washington, D.C. through interviews conducted by high school students from that community from 1981 to 1982.

History of the First Latin American Festival on the Mall: 1989-1990

This project interviewed a group of people who were present during the 1989-1990 annual D.C. Latino Festival. It documents the first time the DC Latino immigrant community was given a permit to occupy a public space so sacred to national history- the national Mall and the Monument grounds.

Mount Pleasant Riot Oral History Project

The Mount Pleasant Riot Oral History Collection contains 10 audio interviews of people who were members of the Mount Pleasant, D.C. community during the riot of 1991. These interviews touch on memories of the riots, community-police relations, the history of Mount Pleasant, gentrification, and how the neighborhood changed in response to the events of 1991.
