STAR: Books from Birth was launched on February 4, 2016 in partnership with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Since then, the program has mailed nearly 4 million books to more than 100,000 children.
Statement from Executive Director Richard Reyes-Gavilan:
"Through the Books from Birth program she founded, Dolly Parton championed literacy across the United States and inspired families to embrace the joy of reading. For more than ten years, more than a hundred thousand of the District’s youngest residents have benefitted from this extraordinary program, which delivers one book per month to children from birth until age five. We are profoundly indebted to her—not only for her timeless music and cultural influence, but for her unwavering belief that every child deserves access to books and the opportunities they create. Meeting her remains one of the absolute thrills of my professional life. We will always love Dolly Parton."
