Describing the trials and tribulations of a group of friends who flee to Mexico with romantic notions of the cowboy lifestyle, this novel is all about coming of age in the most brutal of circumstances. Hard to read, but also hard to put down.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
An epic tale about friendship, love and the intricacies of getting 2500 cattle from Texas to Montana. Lonesome Dove draws you into the characters that inhabit this tiny Texas border town from the first page. Former rangers, cowboys, gamblers and a woman everyone is in love with make up some of the characters you will meet in this book. Each is treated by McMurtry with such humanity that you can't help but root for all of them. A wonderful book.
Butcher's Crossing by John Williams

Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner
An aging historian retires to his family ranch in 1970s California to escape from his demanding children and study his family's history. By tracing his grandmother's correspondence to a friend he is able to trace his grandparents' journey west, and relive the challenges they faced as an artist and engineer living on the isolated frontier. A book about how human relationships can fracture and mend, as well as an ode to the American west both past and present.
