The Chevy Chase Library and the Chevy Chase Community Center are being reimagined as part of the redevelopment of the Chevy Chase Civic Site in Ward 3. Rift Valley Chevy Chase, LLC is the project developer, and Studios Architecture is the design lead.
The redevelopment will bring new, sustainably designed public facilities to the heart of the neighborhood, including:
- A full-service neighborhood library
- A full-service DPR community center
- A mix of affordable and market-rate housing
These new facilities will replace the existing buildings with modern, welcoming, fully accessible spaces designed to meet the evolving needs of the Chevy Chase neighborhood.
Design and Planning Team
The DC Public Library and the DPR are co-leading the planning and design process for the library and community with Studios Architecture and the development team. The design work will begin with a thorough review of the site, existing operations, needs, and opportunities for service innovation.
Design development will occur in parallel with an extensive community engagement process so that the new buildings reflect the values, priorities, and lived experiences of Chevy Chase residents.
Site for the New Chevy Chase Library
The project will deliver a modern public library, a new community center, and a mix of affordable and market-rate housing, while also expanding public space and strengthening connections to the surrounding neighborhood. The redevelopment will replace the existing library and community center, originally built in 1968 and 1971, with a new 23,500-square-foot library and a 21,600-square-foot community center. The new design prioritizes strong connections at the street level, welcoming entrances, and flexible indoor and outdoor spaces that support both informal gatherings and programmed community activities.
Community Engagement
Community input is always a critical part of designing a new DC Public Library, and the Library and DPR are committed to ensuring that the new library and community center reflect the desires and needs of residents.
To do this, we are starting an ongoing conversation with the neighbors of Chevy Chase. The Library will be engaging with residents in a variety of ways, including community meetings, surveys, focus groups, and more.
