Deanwood Library: Building a Library Together

The Deanwood Library, co-located with the Deanwood Recreation Center, is slated to be replaced with a new full-service, stand-alone library. It will be built at the Deanwood Metro Parking Lot as part of a joint development project with WMATA. Replacing the small Deanwood Library with a full-service neighborhood library will provide greater access to library services and resources thoughtfully designed for the growing Deanwood neighborhood.

The project budget totals $27.6 million. The new Deanwood library is tentatively slated to open in 2030.

Design Team Behind the Project

DC Public Library has selected the architecture team of Shinberg Levinas and Studio Tsien Architects.

Shinberg Levinas is a DC-based architecture firm whose projects have included Hyde-Addison Elementary School, Dance Institute of Washington, and the American University Katzen Center Gallery. Studio Tsien Architects is an internationally recognized practice whose work includes the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

The design team’s work will begin with site investigations on the WMATA-owned property, in parallel with intensive community engagement. Meetings, surveys, focus groups, and ongoing dialogue will inform how the building takes shape.

The new full-service, stand-alone Deanwood Library will be conveniently located at the Deanwood Metro Station as part of a WMATA Joint Development project. It will be located across the street from the current 7,300 sq. ft. Deanwood Library co-located in the Deanwood Recreation Center. The library space in the Deanwood Recreation Center will revert to the Department of Parks and Recreation for future use.

Currently, DC Public Library is finalizing terms with WMATA for the development.

Community Engagement Opportunities

Community input is always a critical part of designing a new DC Public Library, and we are committed to ensuring that the new Deanwood library reflects the desires and needs of residents. To do this, we are starting an ongoing conversation with the neighbors of Deanwood. The Library will be engaging with residents in a variety of ways.

Stay tuned for upcoming community engagement opportunities!

If you have ideas for ways the Library can reach residents or feedback on the project, please reach out via email to DeanwoodLibrary.Engagement@dc.gov
