Beginning October 1, 2026 OverDrive (the maker of Libby and Kanopy) will require PIN (passcode) authentication in addition to a library card number when logging in.
Previously, you only needed your up-to-date library card number to authenticate your Libby or Kanopy account and access materials. However, for security reasons you will now be asked for your PIN/passcode in addition to your library card number.

FAQ
What do you mean by PIN?
Your PIN (or passcode) is a 4-digit number that you chose when signing up for a library card. It is the same PIN you use to log into My Account on our website.
What if I've forgotten my PIN?
You can reset your PIN by opening My Account and selecting "I forgot my PIN" under the blue login button located in the pop-up box.
You will be asked to provide your library card number and a passcode reset link will get sent to the email address associated with that card number.
Can the library tell me my PIN?
Unfortunately, DC Public Library Staff do not have access to your current PIN information, but they are able to help you reset your PIN number either in person or via our Contact Us form and AskDCPL chat.
If for any reason, you cannot reset your PIN on your own via the "What if I've forgotten my PIN?" instructions above, please reach out or visit your nearest library location and a staff member will be able to assist you.
It's after Oct. 1 and I still haven't been asked for my PIN. What happened?
Starting Oct. 1, your library PIN will be required when OverDrive apps like Libby and Kanopy need to verify your account. However, if you were already logged in before that date, the app may not ask for your PIN right away.
Instead, the app will simply ask for your library card number and PIN the next time it needs to confirm your account information. Until then, you may continue to use the app as usual!
How do I verify my account in Libby and Kanopy?
