History Book Club: Black Patriots and Loyalists

Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, 6:30 p.m.

Black Patriots and Loyalists - bookCome to the History Book Club at Watha Daniel/Shaw branch of DCPL. We are a small group of history enthusiasts who are exploring American history through stimulating texts. Our focus has been on the African-American experience through such books as Up From History, on Booker T. Washington, and The Black History of the White House.

Our book up for discussion, Black Patriots and Loyalists: Fighting for Emancipation in the War for Independence by Alan Gilbert, tackles the emancipation movement during the American Revolution. The discussion will be led by a journalist and former American history professor at Howard University, as well as people from many walks of life. We seek to dig deep into the issues and problems of our history and relate that historical experience to the debates of the present.

The History Book Club is an open organization that admits anyone who wishes to debate the book chosen for discussion. One does not have to have read the book to come. Copies will be provided at the site.
