Pop!: Meet Kiara
Pop! Street Fashion is an experimental collection of patron street fashion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. It is devoted to photographically documenting the sartorial narratives of patrons who visit the library. Please email My Nguyen for more information.
Not very many people can do the 60s mod look without rendering it as merely a costume. But when Kiara, 19, walked into the Popular Library, I was stunned by the ease in which she rocked the mini-dress/high boots/sassy hair combo. In a city of serious suits and sensible shoes, her style was completely refreshing.
Who or what are your fashion inspirations?
Keri Hilson and I like Nikki Minaj’s wild style. That’s about it.
When you get up in the morning, what compels you to dress the way you do?
I’m not sure. I’m always had the reputation of dressing, so that’s what keeps me going. That’s what I like doing. I just kind of put stuff together.
What brought you to MLK today?
I actually live [down] the street, but I was just stopping around filling applications for fashion stores.
What’s your dream job?
Being an OB/GYN.
What are your hobbies?
I want to model. I used to like cheering. I like dressing [stylishly].
What’s your signature look?
Old school 60s.
What do your tattoos mean to you?
I have a bracelet on my left arm; it has my only niece’s name on it. The tattoo on my neck has my daughter’s name, with a rose and a cross. My lion on my thigh is for my sign. I’m a leo. And the scissors and comb on my arm: I do hair.
What inspires you in life?
My mom inspires me. My boyfriend inspires me. And my daughter.
My mother inspires me because she gives me good encouragement. She pushes me to go out and do what I have to do. My boyfriend inspires me because he’s always there beside me when I need help. My daughter inspires me. I didn’t get to spend much time with her because she passed, but she inspires me because now I know life is short. Anybody can be gone the next day. That’s why she inspires me.
Describe yourself in 5 words or less.
I’m pretty. I like smiling. I like fashion. I’m intelligent. I’m funny.
What makes you happy?
Waking up in the morning, going to work, knowing I can get paid so I can go shopping. [She laughs.] What else. Life makes me happy. Being able to smile.
