Film: American Violet

American Violet is a film based on the true-life story of an Regina Kelly, an African American Texas mother of four who is falsely accused of distributing narcotics in a school zone. The local district attorney offers her a plea bargain with a 10-year suspended sentence if she will accept a guilty plea. But if she accepts, her life will be forever ruined.

Regina refuses to plead guilty and decides to seek help from an ACLU attorney to fight the charges. The attorney proves that impoverished African Americans are often forced to accept guilty charges for crimes they did not commit.  Regina, with the help of the ACLU attorney, sues the local district attorney for racial discrimination.  Not only does she win her case, but the laws in Texas are changed as well.

Starring Nicole Beharie, Alfre Woodard, Charles Dutton and Will Patton.
