CinderCinder (The Lunar Chronicles) by Marissa Meyer

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is also a cyborg with a mysterious past. As a cyborg, she is considered a second-class citizen. She is hated by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. She lives in New Beijing, where humans and androids co-habit. A deadly plague is ravaging the population. The lunar people who caused the plague are watching and waiting to invade Earth. No one knows that Earth’s fate lies in one girl. She does not even know it….

When Cinder life’s becomes intertwined with the friendly and handsome Kai, who is a prince, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle and a forbidden attraction. She is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. She learns about the secrets of her past and tries to protect her world’s future.

This book is really imaginative. It makes me feel like jumping in the story to help Cinder. There are characters I dislike, characters I adore, and most noticeably a character whose circumstance made me sad. Her departure almost brought tears to my eyes.

It’s wonderful to see all the things this cyborg can do, the difficulties she faces, and her perseverance in spite of what life has given her. I like stories that deal with cyborgs and futuristic themes. To take those two elements and blend them in with a fairy tale is pure genius!

Just when you think there's nothing left to do to the Cinderella story, author Marissa Meyer brings something different and new to the table. Go check it out -- you will be pleasantly surprised. Scarlet, the sequel to Cinder, also did not disappoint. Go, Marissa Mayer!
