Creating a stand-out resume
According to Anatomy of a Great Resume, there are four ways you can pump up your resume.
- Summarize: Instead of filling the page with empty words, create a summary that explains your unique value. Use concise language to show employers who you are while pointing out the skills and qualifications you bring to the table.
- Confidence: View the application process as a competition and your resume is vying for the top spot. You simply want to give employers a clear picture of your accomplishments and how you contributed to the success of previous/current employers.
- Watch your language: Avoid starting sentences with I, we or our. Convey your value with confidence using bullet points set off by strong action verbs. Remember, complete sentences are not necessary, but complete thoughts are.
- Keywords are key: Incorporate keywords from the job description into your resume; online resumes are scanned by programmable machines to pick up keywords. Make sure it flows well and you've spelled every word correctly. Customize your resume based on the position you are applying for.
