The Worlds of the Ghazal

Photo of Syed Akbar HyderComposed in sets of two-line verses, the ghazal has long been favored by poets from the Arabic Golden Age and the Ottoman courts to the contemporary English-speaking world. Scholar Syed Akbar Hyder offers a brief history of this form and close, thoughtful readings of work by two Urdu masters -- Mir Taqi Mir (1723-1810) and Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869).
