Q&A with Salt and Pepa: Part 1

This month, we're giving our fans what they really want: answers! We've gotten so many questions from the kids at Shaw that we convinced the librarians to put out a question box so our many admirers could get all their questions in without pushing, shoving, or shouting. Each day, the librarians read us the question of the day, and our thoughtful answers are recorded for posterity (or at least the rest of the day) on our chalkboard.

But, since our fans hail from all around D.C., the U.S., and... the world, we're going to answer some of our most frequently asked questions here today.

Salt and Pepa snuggled upQ: Are you brother and sister?
A: No, we're brothers!

Q: Did you have other siblings?
A: Yes, librarian legend has it that we also have two sisters, Mustard and Ketchup. We hope they were also lucky enough to become library gerbils.

Q: How old are you?
A: Salt: Measure not the years by the passage of time, but by the number of wonderful books read. Pepa: We're 2 years, 5 months, 3 days, 22 hours, 6 minutes, and 9, no 10, no 11 seconds old!

Q: Can you eat chocolate?
A: While chocolate does sound intriguing, it'd probably make us sick. We stick to seeds, grains, grasses, and veggies. We LOVE broccoli! And of course, Cheerios. Sweet, sweet Cheerios. They're the chocolate and donuts of the gerbil world.

Q: Can I hold you Pepa and Salt?  -Raquel
A: Oh, tiny reader, if only we had a quarter for every time we were asked this question, we could buy ALL the Cheerios in the world! But the answer is no, we're sorry. We get a little too nervous being held unless you've been very, very specially trained to handle us with care.

Q: To Salt -- Why don't you come out a lot? Love, Danye
A: Salt: Hmmm... maybe we just kept missing each other! I'm out a lot, especially when I feel like playing king of the world and scrambling up our log or going for a spin on our wheel. Come back and see me again, soon. I'll be keeping an eye out for you!

Q: What's your weakness?  -Daoud
A: We get scared by loud noises and giants outside our house, especially when they try to take the roof off our house and poke us!

That's all we have time for today, but if you have more questions, you can email them care of Ms. Theresa or stop by Shaw Library and drop them in our question box!
