Nonfiction Book Club January Selection

'In the Garden of Beasts' by Erik Larson

book coverPetworth's "You Can't Make This Up" Nonfiction book club begins with Erik Larson's instant classic, 2011's In the Garden of Beasts. Each month, we will discuss popular and well-written nonfiction titles that rival fiction in their readability.

In the Garden of Beasts spans five years in a Berlin that is slowly but inorexorably falling under the thumb of Adolph Hitler. Larson uses personal and official correspondence to paint a vivid portrait of the American Ambassador William Dodd, and his daughter, Martha. The Dodds witness scenes of genteel international protocol followed by street scenes of mob brutality and must make sense of them.

The narrative follows the Dodds' slow realization of the malice and peril of their surroundings. It will be made into a movie starring Tom Hanks as Ambassador Dodd.

The book can be checked out at any DC Public Library branch. It is available in print, on CD, as an ebook, and as an eaudiobook.
