Learn a New Language

Find out how to use library resources to teach yourself a new language

I've always wanted to learn Spanish, but have never found the time to schedule taking a class. This could be the year I finally learn, thanks to all of the free resources available at the library.

mango languagesMy favorite way to learn is using Mango, one of our databases. Mango uses a combination of audio and text to teach 61 different languages. Mango also has eighteen courses for non-English speakers learning English. Mango even saves your place in each of your courses. To start using Mango, register with your e-mail address and create a username and password. You will also have to enter your library card number.

The library also has books, audiobooks and language kits. Our language kits can be checked out like any other library material. Most kits include both a book and CD. All of the language learning materials at Francis Gregory Library are grouped together in our reference section. If you would like to check out language materials from another DC Public Library branch that are not available at Francis Gregory Library, you can have them delivered to your branch of choice by putting them on hold.

I will show how to find language materials in the online library catalog and place them on hold in addition to how to set up and use the Mango during our Language Learning Resources program. This program will be taking place on Saturday, April 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the large meeting room on the second floor.
