Banned Books Week
September 21 to September 27 is Banned Books Week. This is the time when we spotlight books that were at some point decided to be too dangerous, too explicit, or otherwise too controversial to be allowed. Some of the most famous books in the English language were banned at one point, including The Catcher in the Rye, 1984, The Hunger Games, Captain Underpants, and numerous others. Libraries have long been one of the places where people can go to read what they want, without anyone deciding for them what is appropriate.
Come into Anacostia Neighborhood Library during Banned Books Week and take a selfie with your favorite book that was once banned. We will have many such titles on display, and would love to hear from you about why these books are important to you. And if you haven't read any of the books on display, please check one out. Visit District of Columbia Public Libraries and exercise your freedom to read what you want to read!
