The collection was originally a part of the Washingtoniana Washington Vertical File Collection. The materials were removed due to their unique nature among the “Church Series” of the Vertical File Collection. It is not known as to how the Washingtoniana acquired the materials.


Dr. Messiah K. King and his wife Bertha King were members of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. The Metropolitan Baptist Church was founded in Washington in 1864 in a Quaker Civil War barracks.

Scope and Content Note

The items in this collection consist of correspondence, church bulletins and programs, a prayer book, and various early twentieth century ephemera.
