History

The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 as a service organization dedicated to the promotion of patriotism and the preservation of American history. The DAR is open to any woman, at least 18 years of age, who can prove blood lineal descent from a participant in the American Revolution.

The District of Columbia State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was established in 1891. The local chapters were organized as early as 1892 and, by 1962, there were 60 local chapters. In 2006, there were only 17 local chapters, most either disbanding or merging into other local chapters.
