J. California Cooper

J. California Cooper (J for Joan, California a pen name) was an intensely private person.  She gave few interviews and never admitted to her exact age. 

Starting out as a playwright, Cooper decided to try fiction at the suggestion of novelist Alice Walker. Her efforts at novels and short stories won the American Book Award, the James Baldwin Writing Award, and the Literary Lion Award.
