Finding Aid

Collection No. P13
D.C. Community Archives

Provenance

There is no deed of gift and it is uncertain as to how the library acquired these photographs.

Scope and content note

The collection consists of 44 3x5" (19 color, 25 black-and-white) and four 8x10" (all black-and-white) prints of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church’s Community House. The church is located at 1334 29th St. NW, while the Community House is located around the corner at 2906 O St. NW. Both structures are in the Georgetown section of the city.

In 1984, the church and community house were renovated through private funds, grants from the United Methodist Church, and a historic preservation matching-grant from the District of Columbia. The community house was built in 1811 and is believed to be the last English-style cottage in the District of Columbia. The building currently houses a Museum and archive that contains manuscripts, photographs and artifacts from the church’s and Black Georgetown history.

Most of the images are of the restoration of the Community Houses and were taken prior to the work being done. There are a few images of the handicap ramp, which was added to the church in 1983. There are no negatives with this collection.

Processing procedures

Each image was assigned a number and placed in individual polypropylene sleeve. An image number and collection number were added to the rear of each photograph. The completed sleeves were then placed in acid free folders and then in an archival box for storage in the D.C. Community Archives.

Restrictions

There are no restrictions on viewing this collection and all photographs are in the “public domain,” therefore there are no restrictions on reproduction. Reproductions should appear with the proper attribution indicating that the photograph is housed in the Mount Zion United Methodist Church Photograph Collection and indicate that they appear “courtesy of Washingtoniana, DC Public Library.”
