D.C. Statehood Movement Leaders Oral History Project

D.C. Statehood Movement Leaders Oral History Project

Finding Aid

Oral History Project 20

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
From 1997 to 1999 the D.C. Public Library and Councilmember Hilda Mason’s office jointly sponsored a program, funded by the D.C. Humanities Council, to conduct oral histories of D.C. Statehood movement leaders.  Carol Kolker, a local oral historian, conducted most of the interviews.  Dennis Jackson, biographer and University of Delaware professor, volunteered to conduct an interview with Chuck Stone.   The project also included a 2-hour public forum on statehood held at the Library, an exhibit highlighting personalities and events of the statehood movement, and a bibliography of resources on the D.C. statehood.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
This oral history collection occupies approximately 1 linear foot.  The project documents the experiences of 10 important leaders who were part of the founding and growth of the statehood movement.  The interviews cover such topics as the early founding of the Statehood Party in the late 1960s; behind-the-scene politics; and events in the 1980s and 1990s surrounding the passage of a statehood referendum, constitutional convention, and decade-long struggle for statehood which ended in defeat.    A review of subjects covered in the interview is provided for most oral histories. The inventory below outlines the library’s holdings for each oral history interview.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
A bibliography of published and primary resources regarding the D.C. Statehood movement prepared by the Washingtoniana staff is available in the Division upon request.

RESTRICTIONS
The D.C. Public Library holds copyright for the collection. Reproduction of an oral history without a release is not permitted.
