'Out From the Shadow': Charles L. Gittens

Local author Maurice A. Butler will discuss the life of Charles L. Gittens, the first African-American Secret Service Agent.

Join your neighbors on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Library. The author's inspiration came from meeting Mr. Gittens when he met with Mr. Butler's students at Roosevelt High School. Mr. Gittens's story spans working in the deep south, New York City, and being the Director of the Washington, D.C. Secret Service Field Office.

The DC Public Library has copies of Mr. Butler's book Out From the Shadow: The Story of Charles L. Gittens who Broke the Color Barrier in the United States Secret Service. This is a story that will grip you from the start for the author provides in-depth analysis and research to fully depict Charles L. Gittens dedication to public service.
