Yours Naturally: Beauty that grows on you

Last date: Sunday, April 26, 2015 (All day) (see all dates)

Yours Naturally: Beauty that Grows on You is a national photography exhibition produced by photographer Jason Miccolo Johnson. The exhibition celebrates the beauty of women who wear natural hairstyles. The photographs feature women throughout the African Diaspora of various ages, sizes, and complexions. Women representing a variety of professions are photographed both in the studio as well as on stunning locations. Yours Naturally offers an extraordinary opportunity for women to have conversations around issues of health, fitness, nutrition, self-esteem, and beauty standards, particularly as it relates to their hair.

Jason Miccolo Johnson is a national award-winning photographer perhaps best recognized for his trademark visual call-and-response shooting style where the focus is on the subject's eyes and hands. He is the author of the bestseller Soul Sanctuary: Images of the African American Worship Experience. Fifty of his photographs are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, the St. Louis Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

This exhibition will be on display in the windows of the Popular Library of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library from March 26-April 25.

In addition to the exhibit, Johnson will host a panel discussion with several of his subjects titled “The Politics of Natural Hair, 1968-2015," on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m.
