When Fandom Wears a Cap and Gown

Harry Potter Lecture at the Shaw Library

George Washington University librarian Tolonda Henderson gave a great lecture on Harry Potter fandom and visual culture to an engaged group of fans on Monday, March 9. Attendees caught golden (chocolate) snitches and feasted on chocolate frogs, washing it down with a delicious butterbeer. Henderson stimulated spirited debate on whether Ron was merely a sidekick or independent hero, and talked about her Mr. Potter Goes to Washington tour series.

If you would like to try to make butterbeer at home, there are many great recipes online, but here is our particular brew:

2 liter bottle of cream soda
2 tsp. rum extract
2 tsp. imitiation butter
Whipped cream

Mix the cream soda, rum extract and imitation butter in a pitcher (add more of the flavoring to your taste)
Pour liquid into a glass
Top with whipped cream
Put a straw in it (optional, but useful for mixing the whipped cream into the liquid)
