'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel

New drama series on WETA

He was Henry VIII's right hand man and played an influential role in English history. However, power and influence came with a heavy and dangerous price for Thomas Cromwell.

In Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, recipient of the 2009 Man Booker Prize, Thomas Cromwell rises from humble origins to become chancellor of England in 1534. Things aren't well at the English court where his royal master, Henry VIII, is desperate for an heir. The King has fallen in love with Anne Boleyn, a promenient lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine of Aragon, and wants a divorce that the Pope refuses to grant. Henry VIII turns to Cromwell to get what he wants, setting in play events that affect England to this day.

Copies can be checked out and downloaded from the library.

Wolf Hall will air at 10 p.m. Sundays on WETA beginning April 5.
