Robin Williams in 'Dead Poets Society'

On April 28, at 6 p.m., join us for our Movie of the Month, Dead Poets Society, in celebration of National Poetry Month.  The "up the academy" tone of this award-winner has earned it a special niche in Hollywood history.

Peter Weir directed the film from a screenplay by Tom Schulman.  Starring Robin Williams as a teacher using poetry to champion creativity and free expression, it is based on the screenwriter's own prep school experiences.

The film is also known for Ethan Hawke's breakthrough performance and is credited with making Walt Whitman's O Captain! My Captain! the most popular poem of 1989.

Although Roger Ebert was not a fan, millions of film-goers were, making Dead Poets Society both an international box office hit and a cult favorite of poetry lovers everywhere.  And who can't love an excuse to seek more poetry?
