Tales About Magic

Fantasy Picks from Ms. Steward

Does the everyday world bore you? Do you find it mundane and uninteresting? Then escape to the fascinating world of fantasy, and explore worlds of magic, dragons, witches, and immortality in the following books.

Evermore by Alyson Noel
Ever’s world is changed forever when her father swerves to avoid hitting a deer and crashes the car with her and her entire family in it. Although she can see her family crossing over the bridge she chooses to linger “in a vast fragrant field of pulsating trees and flowers that shiver covered with a dazzling mist.”

But she lingers too long.

She’s brought back to life and she has the ability to see auras and read other people’s minds. The sensory overload is overwhelming except when she’s around the handsome and mysterious Damen. He has no aura and she can’t read his mind. Ever and Damen's story continues in the following books: Blue Moon, Shadowland, Dark Flame, Night Star, and Everlasting

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Ethan Wate lives in a small sleepy southern town where nothing ever happens. When he goes to sleep at night, he dreams of a girl who is falling through the air and who smells of lemon and rosemary. He knows that he has to try to hold on to her to keep her from falling. In his own words, “It’s kind of like love before first sight.” Then he meets her at school.

But Lena isn’t like other girls. She has magical powers and can talk to Ethan inside his head. They have been a couple together in a previous lifetime … during the Civil War. Also, what is the significance of her sixteenth birthday? This is the first book in a series.

The other books are: Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos, and Beautiful Redemption.

Unbreakable by Kami Garcia
Kennedy Waters’ mother has died suddenly and Kennedy is getting ready to go to boarding school. One night she wakes up to find her cat crouched on top of her and she is unable to breathe. Two strange teenage boys enter her room, shoot at her cat, and the ghostly specter of a girl floats above her cat and explodes!

It turns out that the ghost was a vengeance spirit who was sent by a demon, Andras, who is trying to kill her and Jared and Lukas are members of the Legion – a society dedicated to protecting the world from Andras. There is also a fascinating sequel to this book, Unmarked, by Kami Garcia.

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Seraphina has a secret – a secret that no one must discover. She is half dragon. In the kingdom of Goredd, it is very dangerous to be half dragon or even to be a full dragon. Dragons can assume human form and it is hard to distinguish them from humans. Humans and dragons have experienced a truce, albeit uneasy, for four decades, but now Prince Rufus has been killed and a dragon may have done it.

Seraphina helps both Princess Glisselda and Prince Lucian search for Prince Rufus’s killer. But both her heart and loyalties are divided – her grandfather, Imlann, who is a dragon, may have killed Prince Rufus. To make Seraphina’s life even more complicated, she is in love with Prince Lucian, who is engaged to Princess Glisselda, Seraphina’s close friend.

To find out what happens next, read Seraphina by Rachel Hartman. Seraphina’s story continues in the sequel, Shadow Scale.
