Go on a quest in a magical land

Fantasy books often feature magical beings such as elves, dragons, fairies, and other creatures that possess magical abilities, a character that is on a quest, and a portal to an alternate world or dimension. Try these and lose yourself in another world.

The Magicians: A Novel by Lev Grossman
Quentin Coldwater, the protagonist in The Magicians, has obsessed over the magical land of Fillory since his childhood. He is admitted into Brakebills, an exclusive school of sorcery, and discovers that Fillory is real. Think Harry Potter and friends in graduate school.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman
In American Gods, ex-convict Shadow is hired as a bodyguard by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, who claims to be a former god. The tasks that Shadow is assigned are more dangerous and sinister than he could have imagined.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
The Mists of Avalon is a retelling of the story of King Arthur, told from the point of view of the women. Morgaine (commonly known as Morgan le Fay) is a priestess of Avalon, an enchanted island whose residents are devoted to honoring the mother goddess. Morgaine and Viviane are fighting to ensure that Camelot remains true to the goddess, while Gwenhwyfar is pressuring Arthur to abandon pagan ways and make Camelot a Christian kingdom.  

The Fellowship of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
In the fantasy classic The Fellowship of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, four hobbits, two humans, one elf and one dwarf, guided by wise wizard Gandalf the Grey, attempt to save Middle Earth by destroying the one ring, which contains the power of the dark lord Sauron. On the way to Mordor, they are pursued by ringwraiths, orcs and wargs, while some of the fellowship become dangerously obsessed with the ring and its power.

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katharine Howe
Howe's book is an exciting story about Connie, who is doing research for her thesis on American Colonial studies. While cleaning out her grandmother's house in Salem, Mass., she finds a bible that contains a key wrapped in paper which reads "Deliverance," and leads her to find Deliverance's physick book, or book of spells. She starts seeing haunting visions of the Salem witch trials, and thinks she may be tied to Salem's dark past.
