Infinite Possibilities International Film Series
The Library is partnering with Infinite Possibilities International for a five-week film series. The viewing and discussion of international films will engage and expose both adults and youth on issues of urban life, community building, wildlife and other interesting topics in other cultures. The proposed films include mixture of adult and youth/family films in alternating weeks.
The series starts Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. with "Skin," a true story of a family divided by race. Sanda Laing is a black child born in the 1950s to a white family, unaware of their black ancestry. Her parents are shopkeepers serving the local black community, who lovingly bring her up as their ‘white’ little girl. But at the age of ten, Sandra is driven out of white society. The film follows Sandra’s 30-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world, and triumphs against all odds. The film stars Oscar-nominated Sophie Okenedo who is best known for her roles in "Hotel Rwanda" and the "Secret Life of the Bees". This film has won numerous honors and was hailed as "One of the best films of the year" by Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun Times. Following the screening, there will be a discussion. This program is co-sponsored by IPI’s Culture In Your Community Series.
