Hot Manga for the Soul

A Brief Guide for all Otaku

For those who enjoy the vast world of anime, you're probably familiar with the source material that is manga also. DC Public Library has a number of series that range in sub-genre spanning across action, suspense, comedy, slice of life, dystopian themes, dark undertones, shōnen, shōjo, and many others. If you consider yourself an avid reader, or a casual fan looking to build a queue, please consider these recommendations for your reading pleasure. 


Bleach by Tite Kubo 
Ichigo is a 15 year old with the ability to see spirits known as "hollows". When a group of them invade Karakuratown, Rukia, a shinigami girl, races from Soul Society to dispatch all bearing malicious intent. During the conflict, she gives Ichigo shinigami powers to protect his town from future threats thus kicking off the story line.  

Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto
Naruto is a young warrior who lost both of his parents many years ago; he carries with him an inner demon that serves as a constant reminder of the tragic day. He has big dreams of one day becoming the leader that everyone can look up to, the Sixth Hokage of Konoha. Before this can happen however, he must first come to terms with his unfortunate past while proving to be a capable warrior in the presence of superiors.  

Hunter X Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi 
You probably won't find a more driven, motivated, or likable 12 year old than Gon Freecss. His goal is to join the Hunter's Association and receive a coveted Hunter's license that would grant access all expense paid travel to peruse restricted ruins for valuable treasure. Along the way, he meets several friends and seeks to reconcile with his dad who abandoned the family a long time prior.

Claymore by Norihiro Yagi
In a world where demons torment the innocent, Claymores are employed to remove their wicked presence from the countryside. Claire is a newly minted Claymore who comes from an orphaned background and is later trained by the "Organization" to be fierce fighter. As a member of the all female extermination squad however, Claire loses her mentor at the hands of a murderous commrade and is out for vengence.

Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
After the death of their mother, Edward and Alphonse attempt  to revive her body using alchemy. However, its use for the purpose of bringing back the dead is strictly prohibited and serves great consequences: Edward loses his right arm and left leg, Alphonse sees his entire body vaporize leaving behind only a soul. The plot centers on rectifying the taboo act and recovering their original bodies in the process.

Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba
You could call Light Yagami a genius kid who becomes easily bored with. When a shinigami death god drops a nondescript book into his hands, the bored slacker realizes it is no ordinary reading material; Death Note has the power to murder any person by simply writing names onto the blank pages. The question now becomes, will Light use this book for the greater good or forces of evil?

Seraph of the End by Takaya Kagami
A group of vampires attempt to take over the Earth after a deadly virus wipes out a great chunk of the global population. They attack survivors and even target children in their devious plans for more blood. Realizing the grave predicament, The Moon Demon Company trains an elite special forces group aimed at specifically taking down the vampires and saving what is left of humanity.

Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama
A village finds itself going through extreme lengths to safeguard villagers against the Titans; massively overgrown, human like creatures with minimal intelligence and communication. When a group of them invade Wall Rose of the village, Eren sees his mother being killed and vows to one day exact vengence against the mostly unknown race of giants.

Psyren by Toshiaki Iwashiro
Ageha is a hot headed teen who wants to help people solve their problems, for the right price of course. When a friend goes missing one day, Ageha's only feasible clue is a calling card with Psyren printed on it. He uses the card hoping to gather more information and is transported to an unknown place with a brand new set of problems to solve, his own.
