DC Public Library to Develop Strategic Plan

Seeks Resident Feedback

District residents have the opportunity to help shape the future of the DC Public Library system. Starting this month, the Library will begin collecting input for its new strategic plan.

“This is a critical juncture for Library.” said Richard Reyes-Gavilan, the Executive Director of the DC Public Library. “Taxpayers have made significant investments in improving the infrastructure of the library system and expanding digital services. This strategic plan will help us prioritize and enhance our core programs and services, ensuring that every single person finds something valuable in their library.”

The Library’s strategic plan aims to align services with the needs of D.C. residents into the next decade. It will include understanding how the Library responds to the ways people access information in the 21st Century.

The Library is collecting input from D.C. residents and District-based nonprofits and community groups through a variety of channels that include phone surveys, web surveys, focus groups and community meetings. D.C. residents, regardless of their library use, will provide feedback on:
  • The most important programs and services the Library currently provides, and what should be offered in the future. For example, more services for individuals with disabilities? New online resources? More professional development and training? After-school tutoring?
  • How the Library can improve operations so that residents’ critical needs are met while ensuring they have access to other quality services at libraries across the city.
  • Whether the Library should continue to be all things to all people or should it invest more of its resources to address the needs of specific age-groups/demographics.
The Library will also host three community meetings in early October:

October 1, 2015
Tenley Library
4450 Wisconsin Ave. N.W.
6:00 p.m.

October 5, 2015

October 8, 2015

The strategic plan will be completed and released to the public in early 2016. It will further help inform the Library’s FY 2017 budget that begins October 1, 2016.
