Shepherd Park Library Makeover

Library gets upgrades and improvements

The Shepherd Park (Juanita E. Thornton) Library re-opened on March 30, 2016 after under-going a makeover.

Interior work focused on the first and second floors, with minor work in one room on the lower level.  Exterior work involved confined roof repairs and drainage problems.  Specifically, work included the following:

  • Overall
    • New flooring
    • Fresh paint
    • New furniture including tables, chairs and lounge seating
    • New combined information & check out desk with an Express Check Out machine
  • Children’s Area
    • New children’s information desk
    • Remove the book drop that goes directly into the children’s area
    • Fill-in the sunken area for young children
    • Rearranged children’s seating area bringing power to the tables for older children
    • Consolidate children’s computer area
  • Adult Area
    • Power outlets at all reader tables for customers to plug in
    • Computers and copiers in centralized area
    • New millwork counter with power to divide the public area and the vestibule
    • New millwork counter/bar for computer catalog, Express PCs, Overdrive, etc.        
  • Teen Area
    • Move service from mezzanine on second floor to first floor
    • Add Mac computers for Teens
  • Vestibule & Entry Area
    • Create designated stroller parking
    • Add new display spaces and fixtures
    • Convert current Friends of the Library room to a public conference room
    • Add a second public conference room
  • Staff Areas
○   New millwork counter in circulation workroom
○   Add perimeter counters in staff workroom
○   Install lockers, coat hooks, storage, etc.
  • Staff Workroom
    • Add perimeter counters for staff use
    • Add lockers, coat hooks, storage, etc.
Second Floor
  • Mezzanine
    • Add three Study Rooms and One Conference Room (Teens move to first floor)
  • Activity/Meeting Room
    • Add storage rooms for equipment and chairs & tables
  • Meeting Room
    • Remove divider to open the room
  • Staff Lounge & Kitchen
    • Kitchen Area:  Remove stove, replace counters, new refrigerator & microwave
    • Lounge:  New table, chairs and sofa
  • Children’s Office
    • Add millwork counter and access to data for computers
Lower Level
  • Friends of the Library Office
    • Clean up, paint, add shelving to convert custodial room to space for the Friends of the Library
  • Roof replacement in some areas and renovation in others
  • Fix drainage issues in the front of the building
  • Add exterior book drop
All interior spaces now meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, including adequate circulation space. 

The budget for the project was approximately $1.1 million.
