My Brilliant Friend

Georgetown Book Club's December selection

In My Brilliant Friend, Italian author Elena Ferrante introduces friends Elena and Lila, whose lives she goes on to follow throughout her recently completed Neopolitan quartet of novels, roundly praised for their emotional acuity and nuanced treatment of female friendship.

Here, Elena and Lila are girls growing up in an economically disadvantaged Italian town in the wake of World War II. For narrator Elena, education is a way forward. Lila is more limited in her options, yet she is determined to maximize the resources she has, including her beauty. As both girls come of age, their relationship shifts, both reflecting and shaping who they are becoming as individuals.

Join the Georgetown Book Club as we discuss My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Copies are currently available at the Georgetown Neighborhood Library, and everyone is welcome!
