Whether you have expert taste or consider yourself a wine novice, the DC Public Library has books to delight and assist you in choosing the perfect bottle of chardonnay or merlot for your next party, that special dinner, or a thoughtful gift.  And don't forget the cheese--you'll find guides to help you select the best varieties for that dry red.  One final request: remember to invite me!

Perfect Pairings by Evan Goldstein  
Let master sommelier Evan Goldstein guide you through the process of selecting the best wine to serve with your favorite dishes.  Chef Joyce Goldstein includes her kitchen tested recipes for accompanying Evan's wine choices.  The luscious photographs by Joyce Oudkerk Pool will have your mouth watering.  Bon appetite! 

The Joy of Cheesemaking by Jody Farnham and Marc Druart  
The authors, instructors at the Vermont Institute for Artisan Cheese, provide step by step instructions on how to create many varieties of cheese.  One caveat: cheese making as presented by the instructors is likely to require investment in equipment and supplies  The authors also include mouth watering cheese recipes and food and beverage pairing suggestions, instructions on how to assemble an impressive cheese board, and a guide to university dairy science programs.

Wine: An Introduction by Joanna Simon
Have you ever walked into a wine store, found yourself confounded by the number of choices, turned on your heels, and exited posthaste?  Does the idea of being asked to select a bottle of wine for your table at a fancy restaurant cause you to break into a cold sweat?  You'll be heartened to learn of this neat volume.  It features chapters on wine evaluation and selection, pairing with food, purchase and storage.  It includes wine terminology and an overview of the wine industry as well as information on wines being produced around the world. 

The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson
Arranged alphabetically, this impressive reference book offers definitions of wine related terms (from ageing to Zinfandel), an overview of the wine industry worldwide, and definitive articles on all wine related topics.  The volume deservedly received the James Beard Book Award.  

The Telling Room by Michael Paterniti
Journalist Michael Paterniti recounts a tale of friendship, intrigue and revenge--all over a fabled wedge of cheese.  Set in the village of Guzman, located in the southern Spanish province of Andalusia, this entertaining yarn would be the perfect literary accompaniment to a chunk of Manchego and a glass of Syrah.
