If You See a Piece of Litter, Pick It Up!

Recap: How Tenley celebrated Earth Day 2016

We were proud to participate in Tenleytown's first annual, week-long celebration of Earth Day.

Last Wednesday, we learned about "guerilla gardening" and made seed bombs in Afterschool Lounge. Got a vacant lot of dirt or grass (it could be your own backyard!) that needs some brightening? Make a seed bomb out of air-dry clay, potting soil, and a bunch of wildflower seeds rolled up together in a ball. Throw the seeds on the ground, add water (yourself or let the rain do the job), and wait for flowers to bloom! We used "Songbird's Delight" and "Save the Bees" seed mix from Johnson's Florist & Garden Center. Thanks to the Friends of the Tenley-Friendship Library for funding this program!

This past Saturday, we had a special Earth Day edition of Family Story Time. We read Todd Parr's The EARTH Book - which had a lot of great ideas of little ways we can help the planet every day - and Monica Wellington's Pizza at Sally's. We also sang songs about helping the environment. Such as:

(To the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It":)

If you see a piece of litter, pick it up!
(Pick it up!)

If you see a piece of litter, pick it up!
(Pick it up!)

It's an easy thing to do,
Take a second, maybe two.
If you see a piece of litter, pick it up!
(Pick it up!)

Afterwards, we made play pizza out of recycled materials. Yum!

Thanks to everyone who came out, celebrated, and learned with us. Special shout-out to those who participated in Tenleytown Main Street and Rock Creek Conservancy's Extreme Cleanup. Tenleytown, keep up the good work!
